Join us for our Armed Forces Day celebration on 1st July 2023!

Serving Armed Forces, Veterans and Cadets can visit FREE

One week on from National Armed Forces Day, we’re inviting members of the Armed Forces community to come and enjoy the museum, a range of events, and our Women and War exhibition, FREE!

Colonel Lucy Giles stands next to an exhibition panel which features images and text telling the story of women in the Royal Logistic Corps in recent years. She is smiling at the camera, and is wearing her military uniform with large set of medals pinned to her chest. Her arms are crossed in front of her, holding a peaked cap and gloves.

Alongside our permanent exhibitions, covering the history of the county regiments and many other aspects of Oxfordshire military history, our newest exhibition spotlights the roles women have played in the Armed Forces from the Second World War to the present day.

We’ll also be encouraging veterans and serving members of the forces alike to share their own stories. We’ve recently started a contemporary collecting campaign, aiming to create a picture of what modern soldiering is about for a future exhibition at the museum by collecting kit, personal stories; even blogs or videos. We’d love to see anything that shows what military life is like today; both on deployment and supporting the country during national moments of crisis, such as the pandemic.

Three museum volunteers, all ex-Armed Forces, walk through the museum's Main Gallery while smiling and chatting. Behind them are two different exhibition pods, one covers Prisoner of War at Home and Abroad, the other covers Winston Churchill's history with the Oxfordshire Yeomanry - a life-size bronze sculpture of his bust sits on a plinth.

If you’re bringing the family along, our Armed Forces Day event will also host plenty of extra activities to keep them occupied, including crafts, competitions, boardgames, and a chance to go hands-on with museum collections with object handling sessions.

Whether you’re visiting free as a veteran, cadet or serving member of the Armed Forces, or coming along as a regular visitor, you can find out more about where to find us here.
