Dermot read PPE at Hertford College Oxford, graduating in 1980. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in London before undertaking a number of finance roles, principally with Lloyds Bank, in the City of London. In 2014 he left the City to become Finance Director of the Honourable Society of Grays Inn and a number of associated charities.
Since retirement in 2023 Dermot has undertaken a number of volunteer roles. He is Treasurer of Ealing branch of the Samaritans and serves on the Executive Committee of the Friends of St Marys, Perivale; a medieval Church in West London which operates acts as a classical music venue. Dermot completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Architectural History at the University of Oxford in 2025 and lives in Ealing, West London.
