"Be a part of making our museum something special"
Become a Volunteer
SOFO is always keen to hear from people who wish to become more involved with their local museum. From helping out on the front desk, assisting with events and education to working on research or cataloguing projects, SOFO offers opportunities for all ages and backgrounds to contribute to the work of the museum. All training will be given, no experience necessary, interest in military history is good but wanting to be part of a small dedicated team is even better.
Our volunteers usually offer 2-6 hours once a week or fortnight and in return we offer travel expenses, discount in the shop and invites to events as well as well- earned refreshments!
At the moment we have the following roles available:
Research Support Volunteer- Help our experienced research volunteers as they welcome visitors to the museum looking for help with their own research. This is a great way to join our research team and meet people. The research reception table is open Wednesday and Friday 11-2pm during school terms.
Tea & Cake Volunteer - Making tea/coffee, serving cake, talking to customers, clearing and washing up. Currently needed Wednesday and Friday 11-2pm during school terms whilst our research reception table is open for business!
Front of House Volunteer - Serving customers, using a till, money handling, talking to visitors about the museum and history, assisting museum staff. The Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday 10-5pm and Sundays 2-5pm.
Workshop Volunteer - A chance to be creative and messy whilst helping museum staff deliver family and children themed workshops. Our Kids Club workshops run the last Saturday of the month 1-4pm and we run other events at various time during the school holidays.
Events Volunteer - Join the Friends and Fundraising team, both front and back of house to help with planning fundraising events, stewarding, setting up and break down, marketing and newsletters.
Museum Guide – Do you enjoy sharing your military knowledge with people? SOFO is often asked to provide guided tours of the museum at arranged times, often for groups as diverse as international students or visiting Americans.
