A small picture of Captain Frederick Augustus Smith who was awarded the VC for gallantry when attacking a Maori position at Te Ranga in June 1864 during the Maori War. On 21 June 1864 Captain Smith led an attack on the enemy's position and although wounded before reaching the rifle-pits he jumped down and began a hand-to-hand encounter with the enemy setting a fine example to his men. A memorial plaque can be seen in The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.
