Judith Curthoys
Judith Curthoys is the archivist at Christ Church, one of only three Oxford colleges to maintain a full-time post. The archive is housed in a sixteenth- century brewhouse which has been sympathetically adapted specially for the purpose. The archive includes estates correspondence dating from the college's foundation in 1546 (the college has had an interest in 183 separate parishes across the country), financial and administrative records, the papers of the Dean and Chapter, and those of student clubs and societies.
Christ Church has a particular link with the regiments of the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry, and the Oxfordshire Yeomanry. In 1931 a chapel of remembrance in the cathedral was dedicated to the local regiments. The Rolls of Honour for both regiments are kept there. Earlier memorial tablets to men who served are located near the south choir aisle. Judith’s research for SOFO has uncovered that there are at least five College members who joined the Ox and Bucks and are recorded in the War Memorials at the entrance to the Cathedral.
Judith served for several years on the committee of the Oxfordshire Architectural and Historical Society, and was reviews editor of the society's journal, Oxoniensia, for ten years. She is also convenor of the Oxford Archivists' Consortium, a support and pressure group for all those involved in archives in the colleges and the University more generally, and for lone archivists working elsewhere in Oxford and the county.
