Philip Carter

Current role:

Publication Editor and Research Co-ordinator at the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, a research and publishing project of Oxford University and Oxford University Press. Until 2004 he worked as a commissioning editor for early modern subjects added to the new dictionary. Since the ODNB's publication in 2004 he has continued this role with that of Publication Editor.
In this capacity Philip is responsible for the dictionary's public promotion as a national resource, particularly in its online format.
In addition to establishing links with public libraries, schools, higher education institutions, museums and galleries, this 'outreach' programme involves the development of online features to highlight aspects of dictionary content and the use of online technology to promote the dictionary's work.
Philip also has five years experience of working with the print and broadcast media to promote the ODNB and has written for national newspapers and magazines such as the BBC History magazine, History Today, and the National Archives Ancestors magazine.
A fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Philip also sits on the steering committee of the National Portrait Gallery's 'Understanding British Portraiture' Leverhulme research project.

In his involvement with SOFO, Philip is particularly interested in connecting life stories with events of county, national and international importance, and in the promotion of history to different audiences.

Research and publications:

Philip joined the Oxford DNB after completing doctoral research on eighteenth-century British social history on which he has since published a book, book chapters and journal articles.
